MANRICO DUCCESCHI, FU OMICIDIO? - MANRICO DUCCESCHI, WAS IT MURDER?

Correva l’anno 1948, un anno complicato sia perché la guerra era finita da poco tempo, sia perché l’assetto politico appariva instabile e non certo privo di pericoli. Dopo le elezioni politiche di aprile e l’attentato a Togliatti di Luglio, il clima divenne addirittura incandescente e le formazioni partigiane della Toscana, soprattutto quelle lungo la Linea Gotica, tornarono nuovamente in allerta sia pure con motivazioni diverse. La formazione dell’XI Zona, ad esempio si aspettava un “pericolo rosso” che dall’Emilia avrebbe potuto compattarsi con formazioni analoghe in Toscana ed essendo ancora in stretto contatto con gli americani, questa situazione era monitorata con crescente preoccupazione. D’altro canto, non meno allarmante era la constatazione che, contemporaneamente, un sempre maggior numero di fascisti venivano arruolati nelle file dei servizi segreti occidentali, fascisti che fino al giorno prima le formazioni partigiane avevano strenuamente combattuto. In questo contesto la mattina del 26 agosto 1948, fu rinvenuto cadavere nella sua casa di Lucca il Comandante partigiano Manrico “Pippo” Ducceschi. Alle ore 14 di quel giorno infatti, i più stretti collaboratori di “Pippo” ossia Giuliano Brancolini, Mario De Maria e Enrico Giannini si presentarono  al Comando Guardie di P.S. per denunciarne la morte e successivamente gli inquirenti, recatisi sul posto, dopo i sopralluoghi di rito, decisero di procedere con l’autopsia. Questa, eseguita il giorno seguente, metteva in rilievo come la morte risalisse al giorno 24 e che fosse compatibile con l’asfissia per impiccagione. Se da un lato, però, le indagini sembravano preponderare per l’ipotesi di un suicidio, dall’altro risultavano falsate dalla mancata acquisizione agli atti dell’Autorità Giudiziaria dell’archivio rinvenuto ben nascosto in casa di “Pippo”  inviato in forma riservata direttamente al Ministero dell’Interno. Da una nota dei servizi segreti si legge addirittura che all’Autorità Giudiziaria “vennero solo trasmessi documenti privati atti a far meglio risaltare che il DUCCESCHI si era effettivamente suicidato”. Malgrado ciò l’inchiesta portò all’individuazione, proprio nei più stretti esponenti od ex esponenti della formazione, di possibili responsabili fino addirittura  al  fermo del segretario di “Pippo”, nonché suo vicino di casa, Franco Caramelli che fu poi rilasciato in mancanza di prove inconfutabili di omicidio. Per molti, anche storici, la vicenda della morte di “Pippo” si conclude qui ignorando o omettendo gli sviluppi successivi. L’inchiesta infatti non si esaurisce a quei lontani anni ma riprende, con maggior vigore, allorquando, negli anni ’70 gli inquirenti, su segnalazione di un carabiniere di Castelnuovo Garfagnana, riapriranno l’inchiesta per omicidio indagando, prevalentemente, sulla traccia, già evidenziata ma non percorsa nella prima indagine, della pista slavo/comunista.  L’indagine, stavolta darà vita a un processo per omicidio che però porterà alle stesse conclusioni dell’inchiesta precedente ossia che non vi sono prove certe di omicidio.  Si potrebbe pensare che a questo punto che la storia sulla morte di “Pippo” si esaurisca qui ma, come in ogni buon giallo, ecco il colpo di scena. Nel 1981 una segnalazione anonima ad un magistrato mette per la prima volta in correlazione la morte di “Pippo” con un ben noto faccendiere pistoiese: Licio Gelli. A lui , in questo anonimo, si attribuisce anche la morte di un altro noto Comandante partigiano: Silvano Fedi. Poiché  molti degli uomini  della formazione di Fedi confluirono nella formazione di “Pippo” si ravvisa che quest’ultimo conoscesse bene le circostanze e i mandanti della morte di Silvano. Si riapre quindi l’inchiesta con un teste di eccezione: il giornalista Marcello Coppetti che proprio in quegli anni aveva effettuato una ricerca certosina sull’argomento e così scriveva nei suoi appunti circa l’agguato a Silvano Fedi: “Durante l’agguato alcuni partigiani (due o tre) si salvano. Uno di essi ha la prova che Gelli è l’autore dell’agguato. Tale prova sarebbe stata contenuta nell’archivio in possesso di Manrico DUCCESCHI detto “Pippo”. Quando “Pippo” viene trovato morto nella sua casa molti fascicoli del suo archivio sono “ripuliti”. Come mai? Pippo è morto naturalmente o l’hanno ucciso? Da chi viene ripulito l’archivio di Pippo? Per conto di chi?” L’indagine pertanto riprende con maggior vigore e riprende corpo anche la pista slava nonché quella di certi ambienti pistoiesi. Nei documenti dell’archivio di “Pippo” si troverà in effetti che lui aveva redatto una relazione dal titolo “Organizzazione Agenti OZNA” datata 16 luglio 1947 in cui informa dell’esistenza di una rete capillare di agenti russo-slavi  su cui stava indagando. Ancora una volta però il procedimento si conclude , per mancanza di prove certe, ma stabilendo un punto fermo: la grave omissione fatta dagli investigatori lucchesi – mancata consegna all’A.G. del materiale documentale rinvenuto nell’abitazione del Ducceschi – non ha sicuramente favorito la ricerca della verità e si dichiara che la sua morte è misteriosa  e non risulta improbabile che possa essere stato effettivamente vittima di un complotto messo in atto da ambienti a cui dava fastidio la sua attività informativa. Tra qualche giorno ricorreranno 64 anni dalla morte di “Pippo”, che tanto ha fatto per la libertà delle zone in cui operava la sua formazione e il cui impegno e’ proseguito anche successivamente, fino alla morte. A lui, che l’Italia non ha voluto ricordarne i meriti, resta l’intitolazione di una strada a Nave di Lucca, che da molti mesi ormai non ha più nemmeno il cartello indicativo del nome.

The year was 1948, a complicated year because the war had ended recently, partly because the political structure was unstable and certainly not without dangers. After the general election of April and the attempt to Togliatti in July, the climate became glowing and partisan formations in Tuscany, especially those along the Gothic line, went back on alert albeit with different motives. The formation of the XI zone, i.e., was expecting a "red danger" which from Emilia would coalesce around with similar formations in Tuscany and, being still in close contact with Americans, this situation was monitored with growing concern. On the other hand, no less alarming was the fact that, at the same time, an increasing number of Fascists were enlisted in the ranks of the Western intelligence services, fascists that until the day before the partisan formations had strenuously fought. In this context, on the morning of August 26, 1948, was found dead at his home in Lucca, the partisan Commandant Manrico "Pippo" Ducceschi. At 14: 00 of that day in fact, the closest associates of “Pippo“, i.e. Giuliano Brancolini, Mario De Maria and Enrico Giannini, turned out to P.S. guards to denounce the death and subsequent investigators, who went on the spot, after reconnoitring, decided to proceed with an autopsy. This, performed the next day, put in relief as death would rebound to August 24 and it was consistent with asphyxia by hanging. If on one hand, however, the investigation seemed to have been exacerbated by the hypothesis of suicide, on the other hand were distorted by the failure to give captured  proceedings found stored well hidden in the home of "Pippo" to Judicial Authorities instead of posted in strictly reserved form directly to the Ministry of the Interior. From an intelligence note reads that “ to the Judicial Authorities were only transmitted private documents acts to better highlight that the DUCCESCHI had actually committed suicide. " Nevertheless, the investigation led to the identification, in the closest members or former members of the formation, of possible perpetrators up even to stop the Secretary of "Pippo", and his neighbor, Franco Caramelli who was then released in the absence of irrefutable evidence of murder. For many, including historians, the story of the death of "Pippo" ends here by ignoring or omitting the later developments. The investigation in fact does not end at those distant years but resumed, with greater force, when, in the years ' 70 investigators, a reporting of a military from Castelnuovo Garfagnana, reopen the inquiry for investigating murder, mainly on the Slavic/Communist track, already highlighted but not covered in the first survey,. The survey, this time will launch a trial for murder which will lead to the same conclusions of the previous investigation that there is no certain evidence of murder. You would think at this point that the story about the death of “Pippo” runs out here but, as in any good thriller, here is the twist. In 1981 an anonymous report  sent to a magistrate for the first time linked the death of "Pippo" with a well-known Fixer from Pistoia: Licio Gelli. To him, this anonymous, attributed the death of another well-known partisan Commander: Silvano Fedi. Because many of the men of Fedi have resulted in the formation of "Pippo" should be the latter knowing well the circumstances and the principals of the deaths of Silvano. It was reopend the inquiry with an exceptional witness: the journalist Marcello Coppetti which in those years had searched accurate on the subject and so wrote in his notes about the ambush to Silvano Fedi : "During the ambush some partisans (two or three) survived. One of them has the proof that Gelli was  the author of the attack. Such evidence would have been contained in the archive held by Manrico DUCCESCHI, called ‘Pippo’. When ‘Pippo’ was found dead in his home several dossiers of his archives were ‘cleaned up’. How come? ‘Pippo’ was died naturally or they killed him? By whom was cleaned up the archive of ‘Pippo’? On behalf of whom? "   The survey therefore resume with greater force and also the Slavic track takes again foot as well as  the one on certain environments of Pistoia. In the “Pippo”’s documents of archives it will be found in fact that he had drafted a report entitled "OZNA Agents Organization" dated July 16, 1947 in which informs of the existence of a capillary network of Slavic-Russian agents on which he was investigating. Once again anyway the proceeding concludes, for lack of proof, but establishing a milestone: the serious omissions made by investigators from Lucca – failure to deliver to Judicial Authorities the documentary material found in the home of DUCCESCHI – doesn't have certainly facilitated the search for truth and it’s declared that his death is mysterious and it is not unlikely to have actually been victim of a conspiracy put in place by environments bothered by his reporting activities. In a few days will be 64 years since the death of "Pippo", who did so much for freedom of the areas where his group operated  and whose commitment continued afterwards until his death. To him, whom Italy did not want to mention the merits, remains only the naming of a road in Lucca, which, since many months, has no more a sign indicating the name.
